The Donnington Wood Community Cafe aims to create a sense of community in the local area. We hope that an increased sense of community will lead to more personal involvement and more cultural, educational and social activities, which will create a better community and a better place for us to live.
The Cafe was founded by volunteers in 2001; serving just teas and coffees. In January 2002 we started serving sandwiches, snacks and hot and cold drinks. By March 2002 the cafe was cooking light measls for the students and local community using and visiting the Lifelong Learning Centre.
In 2012 a Grant was awarded enabling the re-furbishment of the kitchen with a full catering kitchen and also allowing us to pay an employee for 12 months.
Now the Cafe is managed and run day to day by a dedicated team of volunteers and a paid employee. Our feed is freshly made on the premises and each volunteer learns to cook the daily specials as well as being encouraged to cook and introduce their own favourite recipes.
All of our volunteers are provided with training to learn new skills, with the view of helping the volunterrs to return to work, or overcome isolation by interation with other members of the team and customers. Several of our volunteers have gone on to part or full time paid employment and all have grown in self-confidence and self-esteem.
